Naive Attributors' Attributions and Predictions: What Is Informative and When Is an Effect an Effect?

چکیده
Borgida has questioned the extent to which Wells and Harvey's data indicate that people do not ignore consensus information when making predictions and attributions. This article takes issue with Borgida's summary of parts of our work and with several of his arguments on grounds of precision and completeness. It is also noted that Kahneman and Tversky's analyses of data in their lawyer-engineer study were generally underrepresentative of their subjects' behavior. A replication of Kahneman and Tversky's lawyer-engineer study, using all subjects' data, indicated that subjects did not ignore base-rate information for any of the three target cases described by Kahneman and Tversky. It is concluded that Wells and Harvey's assertion that people do not ignore (though they may not use optimally) consensus information in predictions and attributions is consistent with the attribution and psychology-of-prediction literatures.

Asymmetric Attributions for Compliance: Reward vs Punishment
It was proposed that people attribute an individual’s behavior more to internal factors when that individual’s actions are influenced by reward than when those actions are influenced by punishment. Previous research has failed to control for the power of reward versus punishment which, in effect, creates a confounding of behavioral base rates (consensus) with the reward-punishment manipulation....
متن کاملEffect of Spinal and Systemic Clonidine Administration on the Postoperative Analgesia in Morphine-dependent and Naive Rats
Post operative pain and its control remains one of the most important issues in the field of surgery and health care system. Formalin test has been used as a method for assessing pain and analgesia in rats. Systemic and spinally administered clonidine, an ?2-adrenergic agonist, is proved to enhance postoperative analgesia. It has also been shown that morphine-dependent rats experience more chr...

متن کاملThe actor-observer effect revisited: effects of individual differences and repeated social interactions on actor and observer attributions.
This research examined several factors hypothesized to influence the actor-observer effect (AOE). Participants engaged in 3 successive dyadic interactions: after each interaction, they rated the importance of 4 causal factors in influencing their behavior and that of their partner. The AOE held for 1 external factor, interaction partner, and 1 internal factor, personality, but not for situation...
متن کاملEffect of CO2 Concentration in Injecting Gas on Minimum Miscibility Pressure: Compositional Model and Experimental Study
For technical and economic success of miscible gas injection projects, an accurate laboratory measurement of Minimum Miscibility Pressure (MMP) at reservoir conditions is essential. On the other hand, compositional reservoir simulator is a useful tool in gas injection studies and prediction of MMP. The main goal of this paper is to describe a procedure to generate a three phase sequential t...
